The Shikunga Primary Health-Care clinic operates out of Shikunga, an isolated rural village in Kenya’s Western Province. The staff at the clinic are all Kenyan born, with qualifications accredited by the Kenyan government. The clinic is open seven days per week, providing quality primary health-care to all who attend.
One of the many obstacles to people in rural Kenya attending health-care services is their ability to pay therefore resulting in many people, even with life-threatening disease, being turned away by other facilities. To try and overcome this we have developed a policy of low-cost health provision with all that attend the clinic encouraged to pay either the full cost of consultation or a settled on amount.
Currently the clinic is run from an annex to a Shikungan church. However in order to expand our services, we have begun constructing a larger clinic in 2008.
